Singapore, 4 September 2022 – City Developments Limited (CDL)’s flagship environmental outreach programme, the Youth4Climate Festival, is making a physical comeback this year after a two-year in-person hiatus. In partnership with the Singapore Botanic Gardens and in support of the President’s Challenge as well as Singapore’s Climate Action Week organised by the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, the Youth4Climate Festival aims to rally youths to accelerate climate action.

In line with this year’s Climate Action Week’s theme “Towards a Net Zero Future”, CDL has rolled out an exciting line-up of climate-themed initiatives. Comprising a special edition of its “Keep Calm & Love our Planet” series, featuring special guest Robert Swan OBE, renowned explorer and the first person in history to walk to both the North and South poles, other activities include a free outdoor movie screening, an exclusive in-depth panel session with Mr Swan, and a concert.

CDL was honoured to host Robert Swan OBE, the first person in history to walk to both the North and South Poles. Attendees learnt from Mr Swan’s exciting stories on how he has dedicated his life to the preservation of the polar regions and his first-hand observations of the impact caused by climate change to the two poles.

Ms Esther An, CDL Chief Sustainability Officer, said, “The shocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have brought about a new dawn for sustainability, with political and business leaders awakened to the fact that the health of our planet, people and economies is interdependent and interconnected. It is now more important than ever to empower our youths who will become the next generation of leaders to drive long-term change. Through the Youth4Climate Festival, we hope that more youths, their friends, and families will heed the urgent call to collectively reduce their carbon footprint, actively accelerate climate action, and embrace a sustainable lifestyle.”

Running from 4 to 24 September 2022, CDL is kicking off its Youth4Climate Festival with a Family Day Movie Screening at the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Palm Valley on 4 September 2022, 5.30 pm. Members of the public can enjoy a free outdoor movie screening of the climate-related Disney movie, Frozen II, along with free-flow popcorn and candy floss. The Festival will culminate in the Youth4Climate Concert, which will be held at the Singapore Botanic Gardens on 24 September 2022, 5.30pm. In support of the President’s Challenge, CDL will donate $5.00 for every ‘like’ and ‘share’ of CDL’s Youth4Climate-related social media posts on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. The donations will contribute to the President’s Challenge 2022 fundraising efforts for its various welfare beneficiaries.

4 September 2022, Sunday: Keep Calm & Love our Planet: A Robert Swan Special
As part of CDL’s youth-focused “Keep Calm & Love Our Planet” series to turn climate anxiety amongst the youths into positive action, this special by-invitation-only session with Robert Swan OBE provides youths with the opportunity to hear first-hand about the renowned explorer’s numerous expeditions to the poles. Mr Swan will also join National Parks Board Coastal and Marine Director Dr Karenne Tun and CDL Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) Ms Esther An for a panel discussion on the rise of eco-anxiety amongst youths, the role of youths and collective action, and the interconnectedness between glaciers, oceans and the climate crisis.

4 September 2022, Sunday: Youth4Climate Family Day Movie Screening
In line with CDL’s firm commitment towards a low-carbon economy and as part of its long-standing commitment to raise awareness on the impacts of climate change, CDL is kicking off this year’s Youth4Climate Festival with a Family Day Movie Screening for the public. Held at the Singapore Botanic Gardens Palm Valley, hundreds of youths, families, and friends can enjoy a free outdoor movie screening of the climate-related Disney movie, Frozen II, along with free-flow popcorn and candy floss.

Highlights of the event include an opening message by Mr Swan, as well as exhibition booths set up by NGOs such as Zero Waste SG, The Fashion Pulpit and Singapore Youth for Climate Action.

4 September 2022, Sunday: My Tree House’s “We Love Our Planet” Storytelling Contest 2022 Prize Presentation
In the lead up to Singapore’s Climate Action Week and in celebration of World Environment Day 2022, CDL and the National Library Board jointly organised the My Tree House’s “We Love Our Planet” storytelling contest for children aged 3 to 12 years old. The contest with four different categories aimed to encourage young eco champions and their families to develop their love for nature and to take action to protect the planet. Winners of this year’s storytelling contest will be presented Antarctica-themed prizes by Mr Swan.

5 September 2022, Monday: Saving Glaciers Alliance Reconnect Panel with Robert Swan OBE
To encourage positive change and turn awareness into action, CDL will present the Saving Glaciers Alliance Reconnect Panel with Mr Swan at the Singapore Sustainability Academy – Singapore’s first ground-up initiative and net-zero facility dedicated to capacity building and thought leadership for climate action.

The panel session will feature an in-depth sharing by Mr Swan on his numerous expeditions to the North and South poles. He will then join a panel discussion with panellists comprising research fellow Melissa Low from the Energy Studies Institute, lecturer and filmmaker Ang Qing Sheng from LASALLE College of the Arts and winner of CDL E-Generation Challenge 2019, as well as CDL CSO Ms An, as they discuss the interconnectedness between glaciers, oceans, marine health and the climate crisis.

The Saving Glaciers Alliance was launched by CDL with Mr Swan in 2019. Its mission is to heighten attention to the climate challenges facing the polar regions and the resulting damages caused to local biodiversity, as well as rising sea levels threatening other parts of the world. The Alliance aims to bring together Singapore-based leaders, youths, and organisations to take responsibility and action towards sustainable policy development, business practices and innovation towards a low-carbon and zero plastic waste economy.

24 September 2022, Saturday: Youth4Climate Concert
Featuring a diverse line-up of exciting performances, this year's Youth4Climate Concert strives to encourage and empower young green advocates to take meaningful and positive actions towards building a sustainable future. Impactful messages on climate action will be weaved in throughout live performances at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
